I’ve been really noticing lately how disgusting I smell after coming home from work. Of course I’ve smelled me before, but lately it’s been irritating the crap out of me. I work at a bar and so I smell like an ashtray the size of Texas and it’s really disgusting, especially considering the fact that I don’t smoke and will never smoke EVER. My work uniforms stink up my closet and then my entire room if time allows. Even my hair picks up the stink and it seems like it just grows out of my hair follicles now. Despite washing several times, if my hair gets blown across my face I can still smell smoke and it makes me want to gag. I’d find another job but those are few and far between and I make really good money – too good to pass up and get the hell out.
I just want to put it out there that I can’t wait for Michigan to get on the bandwagon and make public places nonsmoking. I don’t know who said it, but there’s a phrase that describes the whole situation perfectly. It goes, “Having smoking and nonsmoking sections is like having peeing and non-peeing sections in a pool.” No matter how good the air system is, you can never get rid of all the smoke for people who don’t want to breathe it in. I myself feel like my breathing is worse from working at the bar for so long – my nose is always stuffy even without cold symptoms. I can almost see my lungs turning black now.
I don’t care if people want to smoke. That’s totally a personal decision. But don’t subject people who don’t smoke to something that causes so many health problems, especially when they have specifically chosen not to. If you want cancer please continue smoking, but don’t give it to me by smoking around me. And by the way, butts are gross!
