Slack city
I know I know, I’ve been slacking. Silly me thinking that summer was a time to relax and kick back to read what I want to read for a change.
I’m currently in Flint, MI for my internship program. It’s running this week and it’s going to be a looooong week. 3-4 hours or so of travel alone each day then spending all day with a bunch of high school students. Oy. At least the group seems to be pretty well behaved this time around. Check out the program at www.emich.edu/writelink.
And because of my internship, I’m also missing out on seeing some very out-of-town relatives that I haven’t seen in ages. There’s people coming from Florida and California to my house and who knows when or if I will see some of them again. One of the visitors is my great aunt. But I guess sacrifices must be made in order to make connections and network, which is critical in this day and age for finding a job. A girl who’s desperate to find a real job and get outta serving drinks has to do what she has to do I guess.
On a separate note, I’ve got a question. Does anyone else HATE IT when you are forced to step away from a book right in the middle of the climax? I’ve been rereading the Harry Potter books for the third or fourth time now, and I just had to leave it right at the end of the last book where it really gets going. I’ve found myself irritated all morning that I can’t pick it up again until much later tonight.
I will do my best to get back to posting much more frequently. This internship has just taken up a TON on time making phonecalls and such.
Out of school and bored
Okay, okay. I know I’ve been slacking. I’m not used to this whole non-school part of life and there hasn’t been much to write about lately. My room is super clean, my closet is organized and so is the rest of the house. I’m still waiting on a phone call to see the outcome of my interview last week. I would imagine I’d get a call by this Friday, but who knows.
In other news, my best friend is back from London where she’s been going to Richmond University. I think she leaves in about a week, though. I haven’t seen her in so long – maybe almost a year. Today is my first shot at actually seeing her face-to-face since she’s been home. We’re going to do a double date thing with our boyfriends and go see the new Star Trek movie. What can I say? We’re nerds, but no we don’t qualify as “trekkies.”
Has everyone heard about the tragedy in Iraq at Camp Liberty? Army Sgt. John Russell opened fire on the camp, killing five of his fellow soldiers. Ironically enough, he was at the stress clinic for the camp when he decided to start shooting. He is now being charged with five counts of murder and one count of aggrivated assault. Russell was on his third tour of duty. His story just further proves how incredibly taxing war is on the human mind. I’ve written about the guy I work with before and how incredibly angry he is. It’s actually scary sometimes. I can see him cracking and doing something like Russell did – he always seems just barely contained.
What does everyone else think of war, or what experiences have you had with someone who has lived through it?
Milestones
Today is a day of milestones. It’s my adorable roommate’s 21st birthday and it’s the day I get the first signatures on the final version of my senior thesis.
My roomie is so thrilled to be 21. She’s been so excited about it over the last few days and it’s hard not to smile at her enthusiasm. When she eventually goes to bed, I’ll be decorating the apartment for the occasion. She and I went out to a local bar and grill because she wanted to be in a bar when she turned 21 at midnight. I bought her the very first legal drink she’s ever had, and I consider that a privilege. She’s an amazing, upbeat and ridiculously funny person and she has changed my outlook on life considerably. I hope that we will be able to stay in touch after I graduate this year as I consider her one of my best friends. Lord knows I’m going to make a conscious effort to talk to her regularly and not let her slip away like some of my high school friends. She’s so important to me.
Beyond that, my senior thesis is DONE. I was beginning to think it would never happen. I’m down to getting the appropriate signatures and handing everything in to the Honors College. It’s a huge step toward graduation that I’ve been dying for for about the last month. I can’t wait to get it off my hands and have some time to enjoy my last weeks in college. As much as I’m ready to move on, I’ll miss college. Who wouldn’t?
So I got this thing…

I got tagged for the Honest Scrap award! Granted, my sister tagged me, but hey, I didn’t tell her to. So I’ll be gracious and say, “Thanks, Katie!”
The rules are as follows (copied directly from Katie’s blog… aren’t little sisters supposed to steal from their big sisters?):
1. Choose a minimum of 7 blogs you find brilliant in content or design.
2. Show the 7 winners’ names and links on your blog. Leave a comment informing them that they were prized with “Honest Scrap.” Well…there’s no prize, but they can keep the nifty icon.
3. List at least 10 honest things about yourself.
My tagged blogs:
1. i hate so much
2. The Solitary Panda
3. Busy Busy Busy
4. Grown Ass People
5. Tactical;-Diversion
6. Breakfast at Walmart
7. Mutts ‘R Us
10 honest things about me:
1. I HATE vegetables. The only one I like is potato, but I don’t think that exactly qualifies.
2. I adore dogs. All I want is a dog to call my own, but alas, university housing does not allow them. Boo.
3. I love traditions. (Katie knows…) I can get quite upset when family traditions aren’t followed, especially if they involve Christmas.
4. I’m addicted to bad foods – ice cream, chocolate, cookies… How the hell did that happen?
5. I don’t mind cooking, but I hate the cleaning up process so I usually end up doing something super simple for dinner.
6. I hate it when people I’m arguing with just give in. If you’re going to get into an argument with me, at least have the guts to finish what you started without completely caving just to end it. It can make me think less of you.
7. I am freaked out by parasites that prey on humans. Just watch some of those shows and you’ll see what I mean.
8. I love traveling, but hate being away from home. I’m a walking contradiction…
9. I love taking hot showers. I used to get in trouble all the time for using up all the hot water at home.
10. I despise shorts. Not only are my legs white enough to blind you, but you can’t find women’s shorts that aren’t Bermuda-style or about the size of your underwear – neither of which is comfortable.
Welcome to my blog!
The electronic world has opened up beneath my feet and swallowed me whole.
It’s truly the information age when anyone’s voice can be placed onto the “information superhighway” of the Internet. The world is buried underneath a downpour of information born of technology and generational shifts. When did “blogging” become a part of the average person’s vocabulary? When did the language of instant messaging become embedded in our culture?
Like others my age, I have no trouble grasping the ever-changing concept of technology. Sure, most of it is probably beyond my comprehension. But using it to my benefit is certainly something I can figure out along the way.
This new venture will slip my voice in among the millions already using theirs. I have enough sense to know that this may not be the most popular blog ever created – but I do know that it’s going to get interesting.
