Evolutionary perspective

I can’t help but think of how quickly the world seems to be moving.  In 1844 when the telegraph was introduced, people thought it was too much information too fast. Of course that view changed with the Civil War, but most early technologies that followed – telephone, wireless, etc. – were plagued by the same criticisms.

Not so today.

Everyone wants the fastest technology out there.  They can’t get their information fast enough.  We’re always trying to trade-up our “old” electronics for the newer, faster, better version.  Our brand-new computers are outdated in what seems like days.  Our wireless Internet on our cell phones is never quite speedy enough to suit us.  Even the time it takes for the ATM to give us our money is too long nowadays.

When did the world speed up so much?  People are always moving at top speed, hardly ever slowing down to look at the environment that surrounds them.  It’s caused high stress levels and a massive lowering of basic manners.  Is the super-fast evolution of technology to blame?

Welcome to my blog!

The electronic world has opened up beneath my feet and swallowed me whole.

It’s truly the information age when anyone’s voice can be placed onto the “information superhighway” of the Internet.  The world is buried underneath a downpour of information born of technology and generational shifts.  When did “blogging” become a part of the average person’s vocabulary?  When did the language of instant messaging become embedded in our culture?

Like others my age, I have no trouble grasping the ever-changing concept of technology.  Sure, most of it is probably beyond my comprehension.  But using it to my benefit is certainly something I can figure out along the way.

This new venture will slip my voice in among the millions already using theirs.  I have enough sense to know that this may not be the most popular blog ever created – but I do know that it’s going to get interesting.
